  23. Hello. I'm not the editor any more and I have some
  24. explaining to do.
  25.  
  26. Not to mince words, I bit off more than I could chew, so I
  27. had to spit something out. After much searching of the soul
  28. and wringing of the hands, I spat out JAM.
  29.  
  30. Now then. Don't panic. JAM isn't folding. Well, except down
  31. the middle where the staples are, that is. JAM is in good
  32. hands. And many of you will know those hands. They are Larry
  33. Hickmott's hands.
  34.  
  35. Larry, as long-time subscribers will recall, was my
  36. assistant a couple of years back. He was with me about eight
  37. months and then we parted company. Larry went off to pull
  38. his own cart, you might say. And pull it very well and very
  39. far he has.
  40.  
  41. When I took on Larry as my assistant it was with the full
  42. intention of training him up on all aspects of running and
  43. producing JAM, and then, once he had a firm grip on the
  44. ropes, handing over total control to him, leaving me to go
  45. off and start some new projects. For reasons which are
  46. unimportant it didn't pan out that way. Nevertheless, that
  47. urge inside me to do something new kept growing, and shortly
  48. before Christmas I joined Bookmark Publishing to take on
  49. some new challenges. Careful thought went into whether I
  50. could face those challenges and still produce and publish
  51. JAM. I thought I could.
  52.  
  53. Book publishing, I have discovered, is a far more time
  54. consuming business than I anticipated. There are any number
  55. of little problems that crop up every day, most of which
  56. have to be sorted out there and then else someone else can't
  57. get on with their job.

  59. The bottom line is I ran out of time.
  60.  
  61. Even after only three months it became clear that I was
  62. doing both jobs---book publishing and JAM---poorly. Unlike
  63. in the past, because of my new commitments JAM had to take a
  64. lower priority, and I could see me killing it with neglect
  65. if I didn't act. So act I did.
  66.  
  67. JAM now belongs to L H Publishing. As the new owner, Larry
  68. naturally may do what he likes. I doubt if it'll change all
  69. that much, and I'm sure whatever changes Larry makes, if
  70. any, will be only for the better. Strange how things have
  71. worked out the way I planned, albeit via a different route.
  72.  
  73. Anyway, as for myself, I fully intend to continue to write
  74. some bits and bobs for JAM in my spare time. Whether they
  75. get published or not will of course be up to the new editor.
  76. Don't imagine I'm turning my back on the magazine. It'll be
  77. a refreshing change to read it from the other side of the
  78. fence.
